Over the past week or so Lamb has done so well with his potty training and I’m such a proud mum!
We started potty training just before he turned 2 by introducing a potty in the living room and asking him if he wanted to use it every now and then. Our approach has been slow and steady and we’ve allowed him to make his own decisions about when to use the potty.
He’s been using the toilet and the potty for months now, but we came to a standstill when he refused to wear pants. He absolutely hated them! So I was letting him run around with no nappy on most of the time, but if we went out I’d put him in a pull up nappy.
I think when he refused to wear pants, I was too scared to let him go out without a nappy, I don’t know, maybe my confidence with training him was knocked a little.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago and he suddenly wanted to wear pants! I’m still nervous about taking him out without a nappy, but I’m taking small steps like walking to our local shop, and driving to Grandmas house or nursery etc nappy free.
The past couple of days Lamb has done amazingly. He’s wearing big boy pants and going all day long without accidents. Yesterday I took his bedtime nappy off, dressed him and drove him to nursery. He spent the whole day at nursery with no accidents (unlike the week before when he wet himself 3 times!)
When he’s at home he will now take himself to the potty for a wee without telling me. I am confident about leaving the room for 10 minutes and know he won’t wee on the carpet!
Another struggle we’ve been having is getting him to do a number 2 on the potty or toilet. When he tells me he needs to go he will sit on the potty for a minute, but as it takes a little longer than a wee he gets a little embarrassed and says “I’ve not done it”. For a while he was asking for a nappy on to go, and I didn’t really have a choice or he would have done it anywhere!
This week he’s been so good at doing number 2’s on the potty or toilet. Sometimes I have to give him a little cuddle and back rub to comfort him, but he’s not asked for a nappy at all this week, so I’m really impressed with him!
I know a lot of parents go for the cold turkey approach and it has great success, but Lamb is quite shy and sensitive, and doesn’t like to be forced. He doesn’t like us changing things drastically and being pushy with him, so we are happy to approach things slowly.
If you’re in the process of potty training, or thinking of starting soon then you can read this post I wrote a couple of months ago about my tips on potty training.
Fingers crossed we can completely eliminate daytime nappies from now on!

Yay, go Lamb (and you two!!) xx
Yay go Lamb! We have had a slight regression recently (nothing worse than poo in pants UNLESS it’s poo in pants when you’re out) but we are getting back on track now thankfully!
Fantastic! Feels so good when you have reached that stage and the child too! Well done both of you xxx
That’s great news, well done Lamb! I need to try Sophie again with the potty soon, but I definitely think the gentle approach is better, there’s less pressure on both of you then! xx
Well done to your little boy for cracking potty training. I think it is hardest stage for little ones but once they get it, it all just fits in to place x
Yay well done little lamb! Potty training is always a great milestone to reach. I dreaded potty training the twins but once they were ready is was not as bad as I thought it would be x #love2blog
Ah that’s brilliant, well done. My eldest woke up one morning and announced that she wouldn’t be wearing nappies anymore. It was the most inconvenient time possible because her baby sister was about a month old but it did go remarkably well which I put down to not rushing her and letting her decide when she was ready.x
Well done you! We also took a slow and gentle method to potty training. Potty was in the house from 12 months and just left to investigate. When little Viking turned 2 (literally a week after) he just refused to wear nappies we had to go straight to pants, after a few accidents we were ok and we have been dry for 4 months now!
Great news, well done Lamb!
My sister has been struggled so much with her little boy, but she also things he has finally cracked it, she is so relieved and I imagine that you are too, so well done to you too!

Thanks for sharing this as I’ve been looking around for potty training posts over the past week. We aren’t at the potty training stage just yet (Rowan is 17 months on Tuesday) but I’m trying to get myself prepared for when we do go for it. I like that you’ve not pressurised Lamb to potty train, it seems quite a relaxed approach. Introducing a potty just for children to get used to it is a great idea before going all the way with it.
Well done Lamb, I bet your Mummy and Daddy are so proud 😀

Aww, well done Lamb! I just bought a potty for my little one about a week ago. She is 19 months old. I figured I would just have it sitting in the bathroom so she would get used to seeing it there for a while before we start real training. However, she sat in it right away and is very obsessed with it! She comes to the bathroom with me every time I go just so she can sit on her potty! By day two she decided to sit on it with her pants down and yesterday she ran over to sit on it after her bath, which was her first time with a bare bottom. She also pulls at her pants and touches her bum to let us know she has to go potty. I am absolutely flustered, as I never imagined any of this happening so soon! I think she is more ready than me!
This sounds like it’s really worked for you. Well done lamb! I totally think you have to go with the child as they are all different. We approached it a little while ago and Amelia went off the idea so left it completely. Now her conversation and she tells me all the time I think we will bring the potty back out and see what happens! X
That’s amazing, clever Lamb, mummy and daddy! I’m going to buy Toby a potty soon – about 18 months – and take it at his pace the way you have xx
