Ok, let’s be honest. When you have kids in the house, there’s going to be mess, spillages, muddy footprints and goodness knows what else to contend with! All of this means that the flooring you choose is crucial if you want to avoid your home looking like the floor of a creche!
But finding kid proof flooring doesn’t mean wall to wall cartoon print or bright, garish colours. Kid proof flooring means that it’s durable, stylish and made to last!
But where to start?
With so many options to choose from and a plethora of “big bargain sales”, “all stock must go clearances” and “sales to end all sales”, you can be forgiven for feeling a little overwhelmed!
Here’s a little help on what to look for when you’re choosing a floor for your little one’s bedroom, your living room, or anywhere else that is sure to be put to the test!
Hardwood flooring
If you’re looking for something classic, something that won’t ever go out of style and something that can take a few muddy boots then hardwood flooring is a good place to start. If you go for a harder type then, with proper maintenance, your hardwood floor can last for decades! Spills and mess can easily be cleaned up too and if your child has allergies to dust mites – which can often be found in carpet – it’s ideal.
However, hardwood flooring isn’t immune to things like scratches and it can be slippery too! If you want a little more inspiration, then check out wooden floors from the discount flooring depot website.
Carpet
Good old carpet. It’s the type of flooring that instantly comes to mind, and there’s a good reason for that. Carpet is available in a wide variety of colours, styles, textures and thickness – making it very versatile. It’s very warm and soft to play and walk on, and it’s virtually impossible to slip on carpet. Although carpet is not without its problems…
Carpet is notoriously difficult to clean, especially if a liquid is spilt upon it. It’s not always easy to clean up debris from it either, no matter how powerful your vacuum may be…this makes it a breeding ground for bacteria, mould, mildew and even fleas! This can play havoc with a child that has allergies…
Vinyl flooring
When we think of vinyl, we often think of kitchens and utility rooms. But did you know that vinyl is a great alternative to carpet and hardwood/laminate. With vinyl you get the best of both worlds. You have a cushioned floor, without it being too solid and dangerous should your child slip or fall. Vinyl is durable and is scratch resistant too!
However, it’s not without its shortcomings. Vinyl flooring can be slippery, and you may need to invest in a few well-placed rugs in high traffic areas to avoid accidents.
These are just a handful of options, you could also look into bamboo, tile, laminate or even cork to name just a few!
