Book Review: The First Hippo on the Moon

We were recently sent a copy of the new children’s book written by comedian David Walliams. The First Hippo on the Moon. I’m a big fan of his so was really intrigued to read the book. The illustrations are by the amazing Tony Ross, and they really suit the story brilliantly. The combination of sketchy drawings, bright watercolours and graphic text makes this book very different to what we already have on our bookshelf.

What I love about this book is the appeal to both adults and children. The story is fun and exciting and makes you want to keep reading. The way the text is spread out over the page, using varied font sizes, keeps the children’s attention on the story and not somewhere else after a few pages.

Lamb loves animals so loved all of the characters in this book. It’s so cute when he points to an animal and tries to say what it is, when really he has no idea! Although he is a little young to read this, the fun illustrations are a good way of me teaching him different animals, and then when he is a little older and can read a few words, the larger font will be ideal for him to read.

If you’re looking for something new for your book collection, I definitely recommend The First Hippo on the Moon. And so does Little Lamb!
