Hip. A word that encapsulates the modern mid-century style. Yet, this mid-century design is also so much more than that as well. It is supremely functional, even for a family home, and as well as looking great, it’s also a style that is surprisingly easy to recreate. In fact, if you want to embrace this look all you need do is follow the advice in my post below.
Do start with a minimalistic base
The first thing that you need to create this look in your own home is to start with a sleek and minimalistic base. For many people that means flat white walls, minimal wallpaper, and laminate floors.
Of course, if your property happens to have floor to-ceiling-picture windows, and exposed modern beams as well, it’s all the better for it. However, all you really need is a well-finished room in a neutral tone to act as the canvas for your mid-century vision.
Placement of furniture and decorations
Next, it’s time to fill the room with furniture, and when I say fill I actually mean carefully select a few choice pieces that provide functionality and design without overwhelming the space.
In fact, a major mistake that many people, trying to recreate the mid-century modern look make is to squeeze in every period appropriate item that they can. Something that they do in the in the hopes of making their room or space look more authentic.
However, this isn’t actually the best approach, because if you examine source material from that time, you will see that there is a restraint used both in furniture and decoration. This being because function and space are both crucial elements of the mid-century approach. To that end, it carefully selecting choice pose that evokes the era is a much better approach.
Finding the right furniture and ornaments
Happily, furniture and decorative pieces in the mid-century style are not hard to source. In fact, you have three options to decide between here. The first is to purchase genuine articles from the 1930s-1960s, and the second is to go for modern replicas that have the same look.
In fact, you can find the most iconic brands online, and even browse and buy Eames furniture without having to leave your home. Something that can make it super simple to find just the right pieces that will set off your design to a tee.
Alternatively, don’t forget that the style is so popular that many manufacturers like IKEA still recreate it today. Albeit not quite faithfully to the period, but with a look that is genuine enough to work in most homes.
Do use pops of colour for contrast and texture
Finally, when looking to create this mid-century design in your home, don’t forget to consider the colour palette you will be using. After all, the style is characterised by pops of vibrant colour, alongside wooden finishes.
The latter being something that it is crucial to try and match as closely as possible if you are to maintain the sleek flow and achieve the ultimate modern mid century look.
