If you have young children in primary school you’ll know that using computers and learning about ‘coding’ is something that is part of their curriculum and learning.
My eldest is 6 and loves using the computers at school. I’ve supported his class a few times and got to see the activities they work on, and they are all about getting from ‘a to b’ using commands.
We were sent the OKIDO Which Way? game a few weeks ago and it has been thoroughly enjoyed.
This coding board game promotes cognitive thinking, problem solving and STEM learning, and is enjoyed by both my 6 and 3 year old sons.
You may know of the OKIDO characters from the popular CBeebies show, and now you can enjoy helping the characters travel around their map.
The first thing I love about this game is the board and pieces are magnetic. Young children tend to get frustrated when board pieces don’t stay put where they need them to. Having said that, because the board comes folded it does have a bend down the middle that needs flattening a little before you play.
The magnetic pieces are nice and big, making it super easy for little hands to place on the board. They are brightly coloured and stand out on the board which helps your little one see the path they’re creating clearly.
The games starts with you spinning the wheel to see what journey you need to make. Using the magnetic pieces, you place them around the board until you reach your destination. The car drives along the black line and stops at the end. If the path isn’t correct, you can remove the pieces and try again.
The wheel has 3 difficulties, some where you need to reach one destination, some where you travel to two. The more difficult ones do make you think and aren’t as easy as they look. My son often has to start again, which is is great for getting him thinking about the commands and how he can change his path to reach the destination.
The only real issue we’ve found with this game is the car. The rubber that goes around the wheels comes off very easily, and if we were to loose it we wouldn’t be able to play the game. So we have to be careful our 3 year old doesn’t get hold of it, and we put it away properly.
The car can have a mind of it’s own sometimes, but as long as the pieces are placed neatly on the board, the car will drive along successfully. My two boys love watching the car complete it’s journey and get excited to see where it goes.
Personally, I love how educational this game is without ‘learning’ being thrown at the kids. My boys both love board games, but this is something they can play on their own, together, or even with friends. All taking it in turns to have a go.
It’s great to have a mix of fun and educational games to play with and this definitely slots into our collection perfectly. A game where the kids really have to think about what decision to make next without thew fear of making a mistake. My boys find it funny if the car goes the wrong way!
