When I was pregnant with Lamb I packed our hospital bags over and over again. I’m a bit of a perfectionist and just had to keep checking I hadn’t forgotten anything. As I stayed in hospital 2 nights and 3 days with Lamb, I’m going to prepare myself for this with baby number 2 and make sure I have enough for at least 1 night stay, and hubby can bring anything else if we need it.
One thing I thought carefully about was Lambs ‘coming home’ outfit. Not everyone picks an outfit specifically for bringing the baby home, but I wanted something that would become sentimental and that I could keep in his memory box.
The outfit I chose was from H&M, quite simple and gender neutral. Although I knew I was having a boy I still wanted those early days to be in neutral colours and baby soft fabrics.
Lamb came home in the following items:
- * White and yellow striped wrap over style vest.
- * White velour joggers with feet.
- * Handmade white knitted cardigan (courtesy of my friends Mum).
- * Handmade white knitted hat (courtesy of my friends Mum).
- * Velour zippy onesie with hood.
I know a lot of parents bring their newborns home in vests and sleepsuits, and I’m sure if I come home in the middle of the night I’ll do this too, but I still like to plan a lovely little outfit to pack in the hospital bag.
As H&M was our choice of shop for Lambs ‘coming home’ outfit, I thought I would take a look at things I think would be perfect for simple, gender neutral ‘coming home’ outfits.
As you can see I’ve chosen a mix of neutral shades with a hint of print and colour. The mix and match sets of leggings and vests are gorgeous and perfect if you don’t know the sex of your baby. I’m thinking mint green might be what I go for if I choose a colour for his coming home outfit. (I chose yellow with Lamb). Alternatively I love the black and white stripes and stars and this could be a more contemporary choice of outfit.
As a lover of print, especially on children (I could always bring him home in a pair of Lamb & Bear leggings ๐ ) I’ve included a couple of printed items, including the tiger print set which is absolutely adorable and something a little more quirky than plain whites and beiges like above.
What do you think of my choices? Are you a parent who plans a coming home outfit?

I love all of these choices. H&M are winning in the newborn collection these days. The quality is really good and the cuteness factor is max! Lamb looks so cute in his little outfit. You must be so excited! X
I planned a lovely coming home outfit but after being in hospital for a week (not planned) I couldn’t care less what she wore on the way out, we just ran as fast as we could lol. I’m loving h and m baby clothes so I love what you’ve picked out. I do think he needs to come home in your leggings though x
I did have a cute little white coat for mine, and actually used the same one for each, so I’ve kept it safe ๐ Other than that it was all white sleepsuits until they were born (as I didn’t know what we were having for any of ours). I do like H&M neutrals, and I love the star outfit x
I have always planned a first outfit (sleepsuit) rather than a coming home one and this time I am hoping for a homebirth so I am picking first clothes again. I love your choices and we have gone for very white for the early days too (with just a hint of colour)
H&M do brilliant baby clothes. Love your picks here, so cute!
Despite knowing both of ours were girls, I always made sure their first few outfits were gender neutral. Purely because I never 100% believed the gender scans. It seems incredible tome that they can tell the sex of the child from inside Mummy’s tummy. I love your choices.
I am loving the outfit choices – H&M is a firm favourite in our house for all the kids. There clothes are totally gorgeous, inexpensive and usually organic cotton. I defo think you need to get little one sporting some of your truly lovely leggings asap though ๐ H x
I didn’t plan an outfit for Blake to come home in I wish I did. I will do when we have another child though.
I lovd your picks so much nicervthzn plain white like we mainly had in for Blake.
Oh I love these outfits. They are all beautiful, I especially love the green. Can you carry one making these when I get pregnant again please? Xx
I’m not one for planning a coming home outfit, whatever is left clean in my bag normally does the trick lols. I do love the mint and tigers though.
