We’ve lived in our house for just over 6 years and as our family has now doubled in size, it’s starting to feel a little cramped. We’ve made some home improvements over the years, but the one thing we’ve been dreaming of is an extension.
The boys currently share a bedroom (when Lamb isn’t in our bed!) And although when they are older, they will probably love sharing, having a 1 year old and 4 year old together isn’t ideal.
We’re quite generous parents (even though we’re skint) and treat the boys to new clothes and toys most months. Not crazy expensive stuff, but little bits here are there.
Add our generosity to my job as a blogger and you get a house FULL of stuff.
Don’t get me wrong, I love reviewing products, it’s one of my favourite parts of blogging. I love finding awesome products and brands to share with you and recommend. But I’m quickly filling up my house and we simply don’t have any space left.
My husband and I have designed our dream extension in our heads, well, actually we’ve drawn it too but our architectural sketching skills aren’t quite up to scratch to share with you!
We are in no position to pay for an extension right now, hence why this is our dream extension, but if we hit a spot of good luck financially we’d absolutely love to apply for planning.
I think one of the reasons we’d rather build an extension is the current house prices. To upgrade our home to what we would need and/or want would cost a lot more than we could afford monthly. We bought our house at a really strong time in the market and it is potentially worth around 100k more now. Even with that kind of profit, the house prices have risen so much, an extension looks like the better option.
My husband has talked a lot about a single storey extension, but why would your spend the time and money extending a 2 bedroom house without adding another bedroom?! Don’t worry, I’ve convinced him we need a double storey.
At the moment our house is a standard 2 bedroom semi-detached. But with the added bonus of a cellar. We would build across the driveway and double the house size. The downstairs from room would be split into a downstairs toilet and and office/playroom. We would add a garage so we don’t lose all of our parking space. As well as a new living space/garden room. (Something that looks onto the garden with large glass doors.) Upstairs we’ve talked about adding 2 bedrooms or possibly one large master bedroom with a dressing room and ensuite.
You can tell we’ve really thought about this…
As a creative person I (think I) really know what I want, but more importantly I can really visual things without seeing them in the flesh. Saves so much time when choosing things like tiles or skirting boards! I can just ‘tell’ if it will look right or not.
As we refitted our kitchen back in 2013 we won’t want to change that but if it was an option we’d love a big open plan kitchen where we could socialise (yeah right) and spend most of our time.
Something that is really important to us when thinking of with our dream extension is storage. We would absolutely have to work out how much storage we could add and where it would go. I also want to minimise clutter, so not too much furniture and accessories laying around.
Simple, sophisticated and stylish.
I’d absolutely love to sit down with an architect and draw up some plans for our dream extension, and more importantly our dream home.
Like I said, at the moment it’s just a dream, but sometimes dreams come true, and I really hope this one does.
