Having a baby brings a lot of stuff into the house, stuff that takes up a lot of room! A lot of this stuff is pretty essential and makes life a little easier, so I’m all for it!
We haven’t needed to buy as many kitchen essentials for BB as he’s exclusively breastfed, but we will be using bottles soon (pleeeeeease BB take a bottle!) Lamb was fed expressed breastmilk from around 2 weeks old so I needed more stuff for him.
So what kitchen essentials will you need?
Firstly you’ll need a steriliser/sterilising products. There are a few different choices for how you sterilise. With Lamb I had the Tommee Tippee Electric Steriliser. I was expressing 8 times a day so used a lot of bottles to store the milk in the fridge ready for each feed. Having an electric steriliser made life easier as I could sterilise the bottles over night ready for the next day.
With BB I’m only using a steriliser for my Medlea Swing breast pump, so I’m using the Nuby Compact Mini Microwave Steriliser. This is perfect for us as we only have a small Panasonic microwave oven, so need a smaller steriliser that fits. The Nuby one is fab. You simply add 50mls of cold water and pop into the microwave for 5 minutes. Easy!
If you have older children, you won’t need a steriliser and by 1 year I stop sterilising bottles, so I also have the amazing Vital Baby Acquaint Sanitising Water. This is literally one of my favourite products I use with BB.
I keep a large bottle in the kitchen to use on everything, not just things for BB. It’s super speedy sterilising and can also be used on hands!
If you are feeding expressed milk a bottle warmer is so useful, especially if it’s a full bottle of milk, not just a couple of ounces. I try to express first thing in the morning as that’s when I’m a little fuller, so I pop the milk in the fridge for later. We have the Nuby Natural Touch Bottle Warmer.
Obviously if you are bottle feeding or expressing you will need bottles. I’ve got a selection of brands to try with BB and to be honest can’t fault any of them. With Lamb we bought the Tommee Tippee Closer To Nature Essentials Starter Kit because we found it on offer and it had all the kitchen essentials we needed. As BB is breastfeeding I’m struggling to get him to take a bottle and I’ve tried about 6 different ones so far. I really like the new Tommee Tippee Ultra bottle, the brand new Chicco Natural Feeding bottle the Munchkin Latch bottle and the Mam Anti-Colic Self Sterilising bottle. I’m actually going to be doing a review of the bottles we’ve tried and will let you know which one BB takes the best, so far it seems to be the Mam bottle. Make sure you get a bottle brush to clean with too!
When BB is 6 months it will be time to start weaning (which I’m terrified about). With Lamb I started with purees so needed a baby steamer/blender and found a fab one in the Aldi baby event. This time I’ve decided to do baby led weaning, but will also offer BB the food that we eat (no purees), so may beed to mash the food a little. To be honest, I’m just going to follow his lead, after Lamb I’m still new to this.
I’ve got the Nuby Garden Fresh Mightly Blender to try out so will let you know how I get on with it in a few months.
Of course you will also need spoons, plates and cups etc. We’ve had every sippy cup and beaker going and haven’t found one we hate, however one of the best for when you first introduce a sippy cup is the Tommee Tippee First Cup from their Essentials Basics range. You can also get their plates, bowls and spoons and you will often find them in the Aldi baby events much cheaper.
So those are my top Kitchen Essentials for new mums (and dads!)
