Ok the kids are back to school and the summer holiday is over. The weather is cooling, sweaters are coming out of storage and I’m sure I’ve seen a wooly hat this week!
So this means only one thing, it’s time to plan for next summer!
If you’re feeling the summer blues then why not think about what you could get up to with the kids next year? Not everyone wants a week in the sun by the beach. Sun, sea, sand, sunbathing. Cocktails. Lots of cocktails… Sorry I got carried away there! 😉
Some families love an adrenaline rush and want a holiday full of fun things to do.
Activities Abroad have a great selection of holiday activities on their website and I’ve picked out 5 of my favourites to share with you.
White water rafting
Depending on the age of your children, white water rafting is a great family activity that’s full of adrenaline and excitement. There are several places you can go in Europe that offers this activity, but according to Activities Abroad the Catalan Pyrenees are widely recognised as one of the best rafting experiences in Europe.
Rivers are graded from 1-5. On a grade 2, for example, the rapids come less frequently. So if you fancy a little swim or to dip your toes in the water, there are calmer sections of the river perfect for this. If you’re looking for a calmer rapids then and want to start a little more gently the you could try Croatia or Bavaria.
Sea Kayaking

Something a little less wild than white water rafting is sea kayaking. A popular choice amongst families, coastal kayaking allows you to explore rocks and coves, or watch marine life and birds in their habitats.
Taking part in this activity allows you to see wonderful coastlines, cliffs and beaches, some of which may be inaccessible by foot, meaning you can escape the crowds. Many of Activities Abroad trips include beach picnics and games as well as snorkeling and swimming stops.
You can explore the rugged and spectacular coastline of Gozo in Malta, or Turkey offers the chance for families to kayak to a sunken city just off the island of Kekova.
Cycling and Mountain Biking
For younger families you might want to try the quieter cycling routes in places like Tuscany. Explore through olive groves and vineyards off the beaten track, and end your day with some well deserved pizza making.
If you’re looking for some more adventurous routes with more of a mountainous challenge head to the Catalan Pyrenees or Turkey’s Mediterranean coast.
Summer Wildlife
If like me, your children love animals, then I’m sure you’d enjoy some trips exploring for wildlife.
Madeira and the Azores are the perfect places to encounter beautiful marine animals in their natural habitat. Search for a variety of whale and dolphin specials in the crystal-clear waters. Why not even get in the water and try snorkelling with the dolphins!
Families holidays can be so much more than sandcastles and slush puppies. Make memories by taking part in exciting, fun-filled activities and excursions.
Activities Abroad have a great selection of activity based holidays on their website, so if it’s fun you’re after, why not take a look at what they have to offer for next years summer holiday.
