Working from home without a dedicated office space is, well, manic to say the least. I’ve got stock sheets, notebooks, samples, review items etc scattered around my house, with no real home for anything. There’s definitely a lot of organised chaos!
Well, that’s a lie. I have a stockroom for my product – my cellar. My printer is set up and I’ve got a work bench to pack orders. We are so lucky to have this extra space I can utilise in any way I need. It’s a kid free zone (yet somehow still has a million toys down there!) and a place I can escape to.
I’d love more than anything to create a Pinterest worthy corner of my house to keep my laptop, notebooks, invoices etc. Somewhere that is relaxing, quiet (yeah right) and tidy! I suppose if I was to reorganise the cellar I could set up an ‘office’ down there. It’s actually my favourite room in the house at the moment as it’s so cool!
According to this infographic from furniture@work, as I’m a Virgo I should be more of a neat freak, but that part of my personality seems to have gone awol! My poor parents had to deal with my untidiness, and now my husband too!
When I worked as a full time fashion designer my desk space was never the neatest. On the days it did look tidy, you’s only have to open my drawer and see the chaos in there!
As much as I try, I just don’t think I’ll ever be a minimalist. I’ll just have to spend my days lusting after those luxurious and tidy office spaces I’ve found on Pinterest.
If you have any tips for me on working from home, please let me know!

Six years ago I moved from an office-based job to work for a big IT company. Since the role involved a lot of travel to meet customers, we agreed that I would be home-based. I did a lot of travelling, but the work-life balance of usually being at home on Fridays suited me well.
To save money, the company has now restricted travel and expects me to ask permission from the directors every time I want to attend even obviously important customer meetings.
As well as this the company is closing offices, so even if I was prepared to commute it would be a long journey, and not to anywhere near the members of virtual internal teams and customers with which I work.
The result is that most of the week I am stuck at home, usually on seemingly endless conference calls. I’m busy, there is little time for breaks and it is too easy to work a 12-hour day without any fresh air.
I’m Aires and yep I confess my desk is a mess! I barely work from it as everytime I sit down even if Andy is home I had titch pulling at my chair or crawling under the chair to get in front of me to stop me working! I need to get better organised Asap as James breaks up for six weeks school holidays in three weeks!
