They’re not going to stay young forever. When your child grows old enough to no longer be a baby, they will have entered the world of a toddler. Now things start to make sense more and more everyday. They can understand the world better, why they should do what you tell them instead of just crying and resisting. Toddlers are also now going to school and learning things for the first time in a classroom environment. Understanding that they’re also growing and getting older, is something that will dawn on you very quickly. You’ll begin to hear more questions that start with ‘why’. So now that they are fully conscious of what is happening around them, what should you do for their first birthday as a toddler? Let’s say the average age for when they start off as a toddler is 3 years old. They might not remember their first or second birthday but 3 is when their frontal lobes in their brain start to develop. How could you possibly make this birthday one to remember?

The decor of the room

Young eyes learn to spot differences quickly. They might not voice it and let you know, but they can spot when things have changed. It’s part of their defence mechanism in their brain as in the early stages, our brain is quite protective. But this is a good thing for you, as it gives you a chance to change the decor of the room for their birthday. Blow up and tie some personalised balloons around the room, in the corner, on the armrests of chairs, or even the ceiling light. At Bubble Emporium you can have a picture of them or their favourite children’s character as the design for the for balloon. Put some sweets in some fabrics around the room which could be in ribbons, or perhaps little nests. They can go around the room finding different sweets and interacting with the decorations. The more they do this the better chance they will remember this when they’re older.

Their very first cake

Cakes for birthday parties have kind of gone out of fashion for adults. Far better to go out for a high class meal at an expensive restaurant than to eat a cake at home. However, children love cake as it has different textures. That’s why you see their hands covered in it when they are given a plate because to them it feels like playdough. Their very first cake has to be special so they will remember it. Again, personalising it to something that makes them happy in everyday life is going to go a long way in their memory bank. For example, their favourite football team, a character from an animation, their favourite singer or some kind of idol that they have. The design is important but so is the taste, so try to remember and piece together their favourite flavours that they never have trouble with when asked to clear their plate at dinner.

It may not seem like it but some people remember vividly events from their 3 year old childhood. A birthday is certainly an event that can be memorable not just for you but for your now toddler.
