It’s been a couple of weeks since I published a Weaning Wednesday post. To be honest, blogging is taking a back seat at the moment. I haven’t been feeling myself, and blogging has been consuming way too much of my head space. So it’s time to slow down and prioritise. I’m still here, just a little quieter.

Today’s Weaning Wednesday post come from parenting blogger Mummy Est 2014 who is sharing her sons favourite meal that is suitable for his allergy.

My little man was an atopic baby. He had allergies, eczema and asthma. All of these were linked together so one would set off the other. At 10 weeks old (after a lot of fighting with the GP) J was initially diagnosed as Cows Milk Protein Intolerance. We were referred to a dietician at the local hospital and the diagnosis was amended to an allergy. Another allergy was also soya so J was on nutramigen AA formula.

This made the world of difference and his symptoms disappeared amazingly fast once this was in his system.

It also meant that when we reached weaning stage we had to be careful what J ate. The first part was easy as it was vegetables and fruit. Once we moved onto porridge we simply used J’s prescription milk in place of regular. Be careful with porridge/pats as a lot of the ones on the shelves already had milk added. We found Ella’s Kitchen porridge was milk free. In fact most recipes asking for milk you can just substitute for the prescription milk (although as an adult it does change the taste of food so really only do this for your child’s meals!)

One of J’s favourite meals as a milk free toddler is a fish based dish. It was originally by Jamie Oliver but we tweaked it to fit our budget and what I had left in the cupboards.

The Recipe

1. Fry anchovies and tuna (we use ones from a can from the supermarket).
2. Add passata and plum tomatoes (J has sensory issues so doesn’t like particular textures. We don’t use as much passata as he likes it slightly drier, so add however much you think your child will like).
3. Add garlic, vegetable or fish stock (look at the ingredients and check it doesn’t have milk powder or soya as some do) and any other herbs you like. We occasionally add chilli too.
4. Add veggies-literally any veg goes with this meal. We tend to go with mushrooms, broccoli and mange touts as J is incredibly fussy over vegetables.
5. Boil water and add linguine (or spaghetti if like me you are looking at rather bare cupboards).
6. Once all cooked then enjoy.

It is a simple meal and you can posh it up with prawns, calamari, mussels etc when you feel little one is ready. J actually loves mussels now (he is 2yrs old).

The good thing about this meal is that it’s good for purée and baby led weaning. The fish also adds omega 3 so is an added benefit.

No milk is involved, no soya is involved, no nuts are involved.

So it’s a fairly allergy friendly meal (except for fish allergies obviously).  J gets very excited when he sees me grab the anchovies in the supermarket. I hope this becomes a favourite for your family too.
